hi, i have a 89 F-250 4x4 with some wierd scissor style independent front suspension with leaf springs. after a good weekend of 4x4ing my front end started shakeing and bounceing around all over the place makeing the truck almost uncontrolable once i got back to town. ive checked everything i can think of and nothing visibly has changed. since i bought the truck, the center tie rod ball joint has been a little loose and the tire moves about half an inch from the other one but it has been like this for 2 years with no problems. could i have blown my shocks? or is this the "death wobble" i was reading about in some other post?
If you haven't done it already check that the steering stabilizer is still in place and in good order. If that checks out then I'd bet it's balljoints and the tie tod ends for play. It does sound like death wobble.
Also, check that you haven't lost a wheel weight while offroading and make sure you don't have a lot of mud inside of your wheels. This can cause a massive shake at speeds.
Also, if it is lifted, a lot of times the engine crossmember can crack where the TTB bracket bolts to it. My bosses truck would shake so violently when he hit a bump that he would have to stop and start driving again. There were 8 cracks spiderwebbing out from the bracket bolts
i dont think it was ever lifted but it is pretty high off the ground and it has 31" tires on. at first i thought it was the tires, but i rotated the front ones to the back and the back to the front, checked the weights, hosed the mud off and it almost seemed worse when i took it for a spin. its deffinately only the front end thats bounceing around. ill check again around the engine crossmember and mabey pick off some of the undercoating. every time it shakes though i do have to slow down to about 10km's before it stops and then i can speed up again. also, i dont think i have a steering stabilizer.
if the tires are moving at all, you need to replace the balljoints. if they are loose they are bad. Even though it has been doing that for 2 years, the longer you have slack, the worse it gets.
You also need to check the front shackle bushings, they are small and get beat easily, and the pivot bushings could be shot too.
