Squeaky front end

Hello. The front end on my 99 F-150 4x4 has started to squeak pretty bad acouple weeks ago and even with some warmer days it has not let up much. Squeaks when you bounce the front end up and down and when you turn the wheels. I jacked the front end up and checked for looseness in the ball joints and front bearings and all are tight. The shocks are original but have not worked loose. Was wondering about control arm bushings? Any ideas?

Grease the ball joints first.

Jeremy, My '97 is the same. The only grease fitting I found is on the idler arm.

That is true, they are sealed joints. No plugs to remove either.

i have heard of this before, i read that some people slit a small slice in the ball joint boot and fill it with grease, then seal the slice with some silicone.

By the way if you do that, make sure that you clean the boot before you slice it, you dont want to get much dirt in there that will definalty make for some premature wearing.

hope that helps
Brian

I might be wrong, but I believe the big culprit was the Pitman arm.
I did the trick using a small slit to squirt grease into the sealed fitting on an Expedition we used to own. It worked for me.

i had this problem on my '97 the pitman arm was at fault in my case

also those joints with no grease fittings to stop that noise instead of changing them i used a syringe filled with grease and filled them.i have to check it twice a year but atleast the grease won't leak out like if you slice it

The fix is easy, Go to napa and get a grease needle for your grease gun. Get under the truck and clean each boot and perice the rubber with the needle and fill all the joints with grease. when done use a dab of silcone and push it into the needle hole you made and let it sit for a bit.

Found 2 fittings, both on the pittman arm and greased those. Will pick up the needle grease adapter this weekend. It did still squeak on my way to work. However the 4 ball joints have no rubber boots to hold the grease, just hard plastic skirts of some sort. Also the Haynes book say the entire control arm must be replaced to change the ball joints, but Autozone sells the joints separately. What is up with that?

try using rubber protector and conditioner on the rubber gramets on the sway bar and anywhere else you have gramets.we use to do this for customers when doing state inspections in newhampshire and it did stop some of the squeeking noises.
