Terrible Bouncing, vibrating, when I hit a bump

Help guys, I was just driving my truck (1990 F-350 4x4 dually 7.3l) and ran over a manhole cover, the same one That I have run over for 4 years. When I hit it my front end starting bouncing and shaking, like running down a washboarded gravel road really fast. The steering was moving side to side at about 2" each way, but the truck itself was bouncing like somepeople were pushing it up and down. I got it stoped and took off again and it wasn't doing it anymore. It has newer tires on the front, the whole front end has been rebuilt, rotors are good (I was not touching the brakes when this happened) and the power steering has been on the outs some. The shocks are old and the tires were cheapies.

Did I break a belt in my tires and combo that with bad shocks cause this?

Did a shock blow and cause this?

Could my gear box on the steering cause this?

It is a straight axle with leaves in the front, and is 4x4. I got it at a tire shop putting tires on the back (they put the wrong tread on yyesterday and are switching them out today). They said they would look at for me.

Thanks for any input.

If your shock absorbers are old and provide little damping, you would bounce all over the place after hitting a large bump.

The shocks are due for replacement anyhow. I'd recommend replacing them and see if it does the trick.

sounds like the notorious death wobble.. did you have your king pins redone with the front rebuild? trac bar bushings? tie rods?

Trac bar has very little play in it, kingpins, no. How hard of a job are the kingpins? I have heard of this but never donned on me that it might be that.

I got it back from the tire shop and they said the front tire was worn funny and the shocks were bad, I replaced the shocks an dhave 6 new tires. IT still shimmies at about 35-45 and very slightly at 60, would a steering stabilizer work to cure this or do the kingpins and stabilizer?

Thanks

the tie rods are good, done during rebuild, the king pins weren't. How hard of a job would the king pins be? Price?

You should have balljoints, either one will cause the shimy you have.

On a '90 it will have kingpins. Ball joints were on '92 and later F350's.

HO mentioned something about the 'death wobble'. I remember a discussion a while back about this where the spring in the kingpin wasn't strong enough to hold the joint tight together and with really big tires it would start wobbling. I think the fix was to shim up the spring with some kind of washer. Maybe HO knows the details...

I just happen to be looking thru the new 4Wheeler mag and they talked about the Death Wobble in the D60's. They said I could find a kingpin repair kit, it just rebuilds the kingpins to correct due to the weak spring, has anyone done this?
