you may have to do a little legwork, but def ask around and find a dealer more willingto work with you and fix your problem.
I did this as well and was able to get a new pump covered under warranty
I am happy with the end result, my truck turns effortlessly now
I recently bought a new pump and have solved the problem. Except that I haven't installed the pump yet. I got new tires and the thing has new life. My theory is the longer knobbies allow the tire to give and let the thing turn.
I too have the hard steering, seems ok when the truck is cold but when its been driven a while at a stop its like theres no power at all.plus the brakes get spongy and are almost useless in an emegency situation.replaced brakes,re-man pump, flushed with mobil 1 syn nothing helped. have not found anyone that can help me!anyone out there ? thanks.

My PSD steering blows. It has the same aforementioned problems steering while at a stop and there's always a whine. I've heard lots of folks complain about this. I'm not impressed with Ford power steering or Ford brakes - at least on the PSD. Every PSD I see on the road around here has brake pull issues. They seem to be problematic. Just an observation.
My '86 Ford IDI power steering is smooth as glass when stopped or when moving and its brakes don't randomly decide to make you fly across the road.
I have read all the threads and I am still just a bit lost. At a stop -with the brake applied; I have little to no PS. It whines quite loud and turns poorly. Once the truck is in motion - no problem. I had an older Ford F150 and it had the same problem. For what I have read - Questions -
- Do I bleed the PS Pump?
- Do I change the fluid to a thicker viscosity?
- Replace the Pump?
or
Do I just live with it?

Yes, Dan I live in the Tri-cities, but thats not where the dealer in question is located. I am considering just going to a different dealer and starting over.

Did you ever get around to replacing the PS pump? Did it fix the problem? I have the same problem, I'm very curious...
Really old thread. Power steering pumps are not expensive, I replaced mine and it helped a lot. I later replaced the box because I had too much play in the front end after all the other causes for a sloppy nose were addressed. Replacing the box and replacing the pump each made an improvement in turning while stopped with the brake applied. Replacing the box is a bit expensive and waaaay harder to do yourself.
I agree replace the pump or try flushing the system I bought a cheap pump from Autozone $120 I believe lifetime warranty and easy to change maybe an hour at the most. When mine was crapping out i put some Archoil in it and it helped considerably for about 6 months then the symptoms came back replaced pump now i can turn the wheel with a finger. I would replace the PS pressure line also i havnt done mine yet but it has some wear from rubbing the shock tower.
