is the miles to empty thing on the ford SD's for lariat models? i don't have anything on my dash or instruments that tells me that. I have an XLT.
is that part of that message center option?
I've found on a 38 gallon tank, that 6 gallons remains when empty is displayed.
3/4 tank display - you used 8 gallon
1/2 tank display - you used another 8 gallons (16 total)
1/4 tank display - you used another 8 gallons (24 total)
empty display- you used another 8 gallons (32 total)
if you a man, drive on, (you got 6 gallons) , the woman would have filled up when the 1/4 tank was displayed

The "miles to empty" info is in the overhead console which also displays the ambient temp and direction and average fuel economy. I have a Lariat and have the overhead console. My last SD was an XLT and did not have the overhead console.

Gas station guy in Dawson Creek BC showed me that if you use the auto shut off on the fill nozzle and quit when it goes off you can get sometimes four to five more gallons by manually pumping the fuel. That's quite a few more miles on a tank of fuel.
The indicated miles to empty is calculated based on current fuel mileage and the approximated amount of fuel left. It is not 100% but it a pretty good estimate. It is only as accurate as the fuel gauge and we all know how that goes! The miles to empty will change based on the change of mpg being achieved. So going down long grades will effeect your MPG, so will it the miles to empty. It is not an exact science since it is averaging, but it is a nice feature when out on the highway and one is wondering about how far one can go until fueling.
