Today my low fuel light came on and the miles to empty indicator was down to about 18 miles when I pulled into the gas station. I was only able to put in a bit over 32 gallons. What gives? Do I really have 6 more gallons in the tank or is there some reason that it will only take 32 gallons? I am supposed to have a 38 gallon tank with the long bed. I guess I could keep driving it about 50 or 60 more miles past the 0 miles to empty sign, but I don't like taking chances that way.
common issue...i commonly go 25-40 miles past zero and most I have ever put in was 43.3 of a 44 gal tank. On most, you should get gas by 0, but you still have a couple gallons at that point.
its generaly not a good idea to run ur tank that low anyhow..not sure if the SD feul pump is in the tank, but if it is, most in tank pumps use the fuel as a means of cooling the pump..
running the tank to basicly empty subjects teh pump to unecc. heat..
plus im sure u dont ever wanna push ur truck by hand from running outa gas, hahaah
Under almost all circumstances, except for road trips, I usually fill up when between a 1/4 and 1/2 tank. On trips, I would prefer to get 35 or 36 gallon fill ups ( leaving 2 to 3 gallons for a safety net) instead of 32 gallon fill ups. That extra 30 to 40 miles between fuel stops is nice when on the road.
Just filled my excursion up. It was on 1/4. I could only get 30 gallons in it. That means I still had 14 gallons remaining. It was on 1/8 last fill up with the low fuel light on, and when I filled it up it only took 35 gallons. It's a common problem with ford's super duty truck's and excursions. I'm thinking of carring a 5 gallon gas can with me next time the X's fuel light comes on and just see how far I can actually go. I know it's not good for the pump, but still I would like to know. I'm not complaining of a $56.00 dollar fill up though. Two months ago it was $150.00.
The gas light came on in my 03 cc v-10 the other day so i pulled into the gas station $1.72 per gallon. I went in and paid for $50.00, then i went and could only get $41.00 dollors in the tank. That was approx 23.5 gallons. I could not believe it a fill up for under $50.00.I quess I have approx. 5.5 gallons when the light comes on.
When my short bed 29 gallon tank gives me a low fuel light, it still has 5 gallons remaining so having six or a bit more on a 38 gallon tank sounds about right. Several times the light has come on and never taken more than 24 gallons to fill if I fill right away.
I too have the 38 gallon tank, and also went w/o refilling the tank until my "low fuel" light lit up. I was looking for Chevron or Texaco in the south at 2am! I was only able to put 32 gallons of fuel in the tank. This is only the second time this has happened to me. Typically I never let the tank get any lower than 1/4 full. I don't have any fancy computer to tell me my mpg, distance to empty etc. So I'm sweating pretty good till I find fuel.
On my 08 F-550, yes it is a diesel not the V-10. The sensor cannot properly read the aftermarket 90 gallon tank. There is some kind of a problem with the computer inter-face program. Any way it will read 50 then 25 miles to empty then empty. Yet, I will still have over 900 miles to go with the on board fuel in that tank. The 20 gallon factory tank reads correct, or with in reason. Maybe it is because of how the 08 trucks read fuel level and the aftermarket tank is a wedge style.
As for the V-10, I never let it get low enough to have the fuel light come on. It is too tough on the pump and allow all the crap that settles in the bottom of the tank to become sucked into the filter.
Yeah, but a certain amount of crap will float top side, or be in constant movement with in the fluid gas. Once it all settles in heads pump and fitler way full steam ahead, all at once.
The pickup IS on the bottom of the tank so it is always sucking that crap up empty or not.
Have you ever actually seen the screen on the fuel pump intake? The wire mesh is so small I doubt anything could pass through it, that would cause any damage.
