Cannot figure this one out.

First off, 2002 7.3L PSD, CC, Towing 35 ft 5er, DP tuner chip set to 40 hp towing mode, ambient temp 95-105 degrees. Towing from phx az, to cali. Slow down from 70 mph to 35 thru Gila Bend. As I start to gain speed check engine light comes on, truck starts running like it is missing. Truck never got over 1100 degrees pre turbo, tranny 170, coolant 208 (hottest) oil pressure fine, boost fine, blah blah blah, I pull over trouble codes are 1316 ( injector drive module codes) I change CPS, check oil, reconnect batteries, set chip to stock, Approx 1 hour time goes by. Start truck seems fine. Get moving again, 1 mile down road same symptoms. Limp 100 miles into Yuma. Take truck to dealer, unable to even look at truck until MAYBE tomorrow. get trailer set up for night here, take family to dinner, Come out 1 hour truck starts and runs fine, no missing no check engine light, Drove around town empty changing chip settings and no problems. WTF is going on??? Any advice. Still plan on seeing dealer in AM, but we al know, "If we cannot duplicate problem it doesn't exist" And I am sure I will get 20 miles out of town and problem will come back. Now here is the real kicker. Have reservations at campland in Cali, sea world, and Laughlin on the way home. All non-refundable reservations, Best friend getting married Saturday at 1100am. Do not want to miss any of it. Any help???

I would pull the chip and see if you can putt through the rest of your vacation in pure stock mode. You could always try getting underway like you are and if it happens then try that, but who knows where you'll be when it happens. Or you can await the stealer, and miss your events for sure.

Just, finished removing the chip, test drove and again drives fine no CEL and runs smooth, dealer will probably tell me " No probs here" then 20 miles from yuma I bet it starts again. Man this is frustrating

Are you really wanting to hang around and try your luck at the dealer? Really?

Edit: BTW, what shape is your tranny in and how many miles on it? Also, is your boost gauge reading normally when you experience the problem and try to accelerate? Maybe your boost fooler or a boost leak under load and hot?

I had the same thing happen to me just after climbing the rim, never had the pyro above 1200. After we stopped at woods canyon lake it was missing and had bad injector knock. I had about 2800 miles on the oil, and new filters when ever oil is changed. After sitting overnight it seemed alright, then on the way back into the valley just after rye hill it started it all over again. Got it home, still clueless, so decided just for giggles to change the oil and filters again and it has never come back since. I don't know if it was bad fuel or the oil thinning??? Good luck on finding it and enjoy your trip.

the code you have is an indicator that other idm/injector codes exist in the i think the key on engine off code section and in the buzz test areana. everytime i have seen that at work there was an electrical injector issue. wiring harness' or injector coil issue.

What tjbeggs said. The first thought that came to my mind as well is wiring harness's.
Fire Rooster if you have some tools you could pull the VC and see that the plugs are in all the way. That's just basic stuff, no need to take it in for that.

IDM codes usually indicate a bad harness or the IDM about to puke on you.

well, this am took it in they cannot reproduce issue> Hmmm, hooked up trailer, loaded family, got 2 miles down road and guess what???? Took trailer back and dropped it, and went straight to dealer. They were able to get the buzz test to show that injector 7 has a high/low circut issue. So it is as I suspected not the IDM, but it is either the wiring harness under the VC or a bad injector itself. He repeated the buzz test 2 minutes later and not problem. We are both thinking it is the injector. My truck is still under warranty so he is replacing both the harness and the injector. This service dept is actually pretty customer service oriented. So right now I am back at the trailer with the truck in the dealer getting worked on. I will keep you all posted.

Thanks BTW to all for being a sounding board.

Be sure to check the wiring from the IDM to the valve covers. They tend to rub through the insulation and short to ground.

Great deal. That makes all the diff, under warranty. Disregard my previous as even if they botch it, still out only the deductible and they still gotta fix it.

OK update time and a few more questions. Got truck back and all seems to run well. Pulled trailer into San diego.... no issues other then chip is out so truck actually slowed to 40 mph coming up over the mountains. Got into camp at 10pm. Next morning checked oil, it was a quart low. I di not check it when I picked up truck from dealer. (was in such a hurry and figured they would have done it) Noticed there was oil all over engine, and frame below injector #7. I cleaned the engine off and frame, added quart of oil, put chip back in. All seems fine. So my questions are, 1 would changing an injector can it loose a full quart of oil? Also I noticed oil is a little more black then usual. It has 2500 miles on this oil. (note) I run 100% bio diesel in my trucks so usually at 300o mile oil change it is still pretty golden. But during this trip it has run two tanks of diesel #2 through it. So questio #2 is that enough Petroleum diesel running through truck to darken oil? It still is golden in color in sun but is much blacker then normal for me.

yes doing an injector can lower the oil by 1 quart and i wouldn't worry about the oil color since you have run dino fuel through it. glad to hear you are good to go now! enjoy the rest of your trip!

It could be an injector, but what you are describing can also be symptoms of a PCM or IDM overheating. This is why it does not duplicate after sitting. Electrical issues are hard to chase down. Look at the IDM or PCM for possibly causing this issue. Just giving you something else to consider.

Diane,

I run the DP-tuner in my truck and tow with the heavy tow setting, can this cause the idm or pcm to heat up? I have had no problems with the truck to this point. And at the dealer with a buzz test he found the bad injector. I do not want to run into any problems on the way home.
