I know this is a tired subject, but i m in the middle of replacing my heater core and i m wondering what the cable on top of the core panel does and how do i remove it for my purpose w/o breaking something i may need later.

i think it's the one for the heat damper, meaning, it controls whether the air is coming THROUGH the heater core or not, thus, allowing you to have temperature control.
There should be a foam seal with two holes in it that slide over the heater core tubes. If yours is gone, just get some foam, cut it to fit, cut the two holes, and once you have the core installed, slide it over the tubes before you attach the hoses. Or you can use strips of body sealer.
Yes, the cable goes to the heater mix door from the temperature ****. Check the adjustment before you reassemble to be sure the door closes good for best air conditioning (important here in Texas). Expect one screw on the heater core box to be a challenge to get to but the project is super easy otherwise.
As for the seal, when my core started leaking the coolant ran in front of the firewall, not in the cab. When I finished replacing the heater core I ran RTV around each core pipe where they protrude through the firewall laying it in between the hoses and firewall.
