I tried to pull a buddy of mine out of a mud hole this weekend and the chain we were using snapped. Now I have about a dozen or more dents in my tail-gate and back bed corner and a scuffed up tail light. After further inspection I also noticed that it bent my hitch and pushed my bumper up slightly....I'm afraid to see what its gonna cost to get it fixed but I can't stand it being messed up. :-(
ouch! a good tow "rope" or heavy nautical rope i have found works best for pullin out buddies. 2 reasons, 1 the rope will stretch as tension builds and you use this to your advantage by pullin and letting off and let the rope spring a bit. 2 if it does break it usally does minimal damage if any at all.

This is true but it wasn't my chain as I hadn't gone with the intention of towing anyone. The chain belonged to the guy I was pulling. The problem with replacing the tailgate is that I have the spray in bed liner on mine so I would like to repair it if possible.
You might find it's cheaper to replace the tailgate and have the bedliner sprayed just on that part, I would atleast call and check both ways.
And the tow rope nylon straps are the best way to go, I used to carry one behind my seat at all times when I was doing any wheelin.
Well at this point I am waiting till I get a chance to get an estimate for repair. I have talked to my insurance agent about my comprehensive coverage since I dont have a deductible for comprehensive so I have submitted a claim and I will see where it goes after I get the estimate.
Well technically I wasn't offroading, I was watching but my buddy got stuck and I had to lend him a hand. Luckily the neighbor had a tractor and chains to pull him out.
I thought the listed weight of a 6.9 complete was a hair over 1100lbs add the tranny and your looking at around 1400, still short of a ton, but still too heavy for most cherry pickers.
I learned along time ago to use a tow strap, a chain just doesn't get it, and now you see why, not to mention it could be dangerous to a by stander. You should get your self a tow strap and carry it with you, then you won't be caught in a lerch trying to help a buddy out. I feel for you, I've done it my self. If your like me, you won't be able to sleep at night untill your truck is fixed. So good luck with your fix, and get that tow strap, you just never know !!
