frame coating?

I've got my '79 F150 town down pretty far so I can do the suspension. Since I'm here I want to POR-15 the frame. I pressured washed/degreased it and it looked like I had some light surface rust. It's not. It's dirt...so I went to start wire wheeling it away. The "dirt" comes off but the black stuff really stays. Takes forever to get it even where you can kind of see metal. I have no idea what it is tho? It doesn't seem like paint, what type of coating is this? trying to decide if I should just brush off the dirt/rust spots and degrease/etch with the por products and paint over it with the POR15 or what.

Any help would be appreciated?

Nick

It sounds like it is a undercoating of some sort. Sand or plastic blasting the frame would be your best solution. Trust me. I had started doing the same thing you are by using a flap disc to clean the frame but after realizing it will take forever (and the fact you can't get into the corners with it) I'm having it sandblasted and then powder coated. You could also try using muriatic acid on the frame but I'm not 100% sure what it would do to the metal. I know it will clean the paint, grease, and dirt off of it. Hope this helps some.

I don't want to use any sort of medial blasting as I don't want that stuff all inside the cab body (cab isn't totally off the frame, just lifted up some, as is the front sheetmetal, didn't want to take that all apart as Im not doing the body now...long story as to why). But if I have to I guess I will. If I take it that far I'll have the frame dipped, they have a place locally that uses electro waves thru water to remove material...no acid...very cool works awsome.

I had the same thing on my 77 F150 and it is undercoating. My truck had been undercoated with the Ziebart undercoating process. I scrap most of it off with a scaper and then I use laquer thinner or mineral spirits to remove whats left. It cleans this stuff off really well. I use a scrapers and scotch brite pads to totally remove the undercoating.

well mineral spirits didn't touch the stuff. This isnt so much of like a rubber, its like a paint or a powdercoat but when I use my wire wheel it just like smooths it out. Im half tempted to coat over it but they say not to.

Any more ideas?

Try Lacquer thinner on it, that worked the best for me.

I think I know what you are talking about. Seems like a hard rubber paint. Maybe run a propane torch to burn it off or heat it up and scrape it off.
