He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.
He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that' is when it occured.
Mr Irwin's body was being flown to Cairns.
Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.
It is believed Mr Irwin's American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania and has yet to be told of her husband's death.
Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!".
The father of two's Crocodile Hunter program was first broadcast in 1992 and has been shown around the world on cable network Discovery.
He has also starred in movies and has developed the Australia Zoo wildlife park, north of Brisbane, which was started by his parents Bob and Lyn Irwin."
Dayum, I really liked that guy. Ironic, wrestles crocs, plays with the most dangerous snakes and spiders in the world, but is done in by a relatively docile animal.
I just heard it myself on TV...where else to come for the details but FTE. I thought the guy was dang-near invincible. What a loss, his charisma and enthusiasm was just incredible to watch.
Read the part about his early life, the guy wrestled crocs and played with snakes but had a fear of PARROTS oh well guess everyone has a fear of something but that is almost comically all things considered.
What guy isn't afraid of birds? I know I am. Atleast he didn't die from a heart attack or something like that, he died doing something he loved. My only question: where was Suey, his dog?

Suey was probably in the boat. I just would like to know how he got a stingray barb into his chest as they lay horizontally along the tail. Who would have thought that a guy that plays with crocs and positions snakes would parish to a stingray.
I also do not like birds, but I really fear clowns…… at least he knew fear.
I heard the story on the news 20 thousand times between 0300 and now. He was very entertaining, and I am one that actually enjoyed his shows. This is kind of ironic, he has been bitten by the deadliest animals known to man, and survived, but a stingray, an animal that almost no one dies by being stung. Weird.
His shows were entertaining and educational but with his lifestyle it was only a matter of time b4 something took him out. T least he was doing something he enjoyed which is better than most of us get to do. He enjoyed his life and he will be missed.
Man this brings the suck! The one thing that is cool is that he didn't die from a croc or a snake. How many people would have been sitting in their living rooms saying "What did I tell you? I've been saying it for years . . . one of these days that crazy guy will get his head bit off or get bitten by a snake!" But playing in the water and getting nailed by a stingray? That's gonna have them all stumped.
So long Steve . . . we'll miss ya.
