Hello again, I have a 1970 f350 that started life as a 26 ft motorhome it has a 360 in it now that is in serious need of a rebuild.Since I have bought this rv I have removed the entire rv section down to the frame cut off 5 feet of chassie and installed a 10 ft dimondplate flat bed and built a 40 inch sleeper unit off the cab since there was a hole there.I also have a 11.5ft cabover I'm putting on.The transmission which is a C6 has been rebuilt with a low stall torque converter... My ? is should I rebuild my 360 or go with the 390? I'm also planning on a after market overdrive like a milemarker or advanced adapters unit. Not looking for outrages power just would like a reliable truck that can tow decent I'm planning on traveling with this rig,,Thanks for your opinions these forums have been a great help.
I was where you are about a year ago. By the time you sink money into that 360 to get a little more power, you're still getting very poor mileage. I was averaging 7-8 mpg with my 360!! That was enough to make me throw a different crank and set of rods in. W/ the 390, crane performance cam of your choice, 4v intake/carb of your choice and a good bit of research/planning/preparation, you can then have loads of power, almost twice the mileage and a camper that'll get you cross-country faster than anyone else! Especially if you're going with a gear vendors o/d unit...you'll really love that package! As far as dependability, the 390 is top dog. Big components and good engineering makes for a great every day engine! You would have thought they'd run this thing in nascar...
I could be wrong but i beleive in the early days they did run 406's in NASCAR. nat too far off from the 390.
Trouble with a 406 is that it has the 4.13" bore, the same as a 428 and most blocks won't take the much boring without major problems. A 390 is a better way to go.

I was just saying that i thought they were used in nascars nothing about bore or anything like that.....the deer are not laughing they are confused
With the weight and OD gearing a 410 would come up short on torque. Go with a 4,125" or 4.250" crank to pull that OD and bad aerodynamics.
I would go with a 451".
