I am considering buying a new 2006 250SD 4x4 with 5.4 and 3.73 gears. the Ford towing guide shows 9300 for both conventional and 5th wheel. Is this a power train limitation or misprint on the 5th wheel weights
I am currently towing a small 3 horse gooseneck trailer usually 2 horses and camping gear in the midwest. Believe I am under the 9300# but have always towed with big block gas or PSD. Do I really need to step down to 4.10 gears and give up gas mileage for 10-12 camping trips a year
I am not exaclty sure what my trailer weight is but with a dual axle trailer with a bobcat on it my F250 with 373's is slow and I really dont like it. I only tow with it occasionally but I do wish I had some 4 10 s
I have a 2004 f250 with the 5.4 & 3.73 . I towed a 7 x 16 enclosed construction trailer everyday for 1 and half years with no problems. Sometimes pull a flatbed loaded with 2 bunks of plywood and a enough lumber to build a 2500 sq. ft. house.... I love my truck , ,it lives up to its name... super duty..
Threads in Forum: Towing, Trailers And 5th Wheels this is a good place for info ,check out a thread called [ what to tow with] theres a lott of good input
Mine also is a 04 F250 with the 5.4 & 3.73 gears. Pulls a lawn trailer and a dump/mulch trailer. Not sure how much cypress mulch weighs but it pulls 6 Yrds fairly easy, Both have had no problems.
I just got rid of my 02 F350 SD SC with 5.4l gas and 4.10 gears and 285 tires. I could tow anything I wanted and did. It was a 4x4 and my limit was 15,000# for both truck and trailer and I hit that amount a few times. As to mileage around the city I got 10-12 miles to the gallon and on the road 14-16miles to a gallon. Didn't seem to make much difference if it was loaded or not. I traded it last weekend for an 06 for two reasons 1 the deal was great and the family had out grown the SC. I now have a F250 SD CC and a 6.0L diesel couldn't find a gas engine and the dealer told me that if I really had to have one that I would have to special order an 07 to get it and wait a long time. I think he was correct as he had maybe 40-50 trucks on his lot and all the super duties were diesel. Will the diesel be better than my gas enigne one only time will tell as it has been 26 years since I had a diesel and a lot has changed. But from watching the ford milo meter it seems to be doing almost as good as the gas engine did on trips just driving around the city if that is the case and I can get the 19-21 on the road like the dear and others have told me they get then I did get a good deal.
just my 3cents
After reading some more posts, I think the 3.93's are where I went wrong. I figured the mileage would have been bad with the 4.10 s or 4.30 but when towing I really think the truck is a dog. Its a good thing I usually tow with our diesels.
ive got the 4.10s in my 05 f250 sd 4x4 5.4 and its not that much of a difference from the 3.73 my dad has in his truck and we tow everyday. a 24' and 22' dual axle box trailers and theres not a big difference.
thanks for the info... Finally found a dealer that had an 06 XL 4x4 which is what I wanted since it seems I am always in mud, horse @#$%, etc. and tired of always cleaning the carpets.
