I always close my eyes when I see a 5th wheel on the back of a F150.....you will be told by many people on here that you will need to provide more info on your weight ratings for your truck. Front and rear axle weights from door dag, actual weights from a CAT scale, what the pin weight is of the 5er, what the GCWR is on the 150, Max payload rating, tire weight ratings.....

ok...so now we need to know the axle weights as rated on the door tag of your truck, it would be a good idea to take your truck to a scale to get a front and rear axle weight with full tank of gas and the passengers that you would be carrying....then we can figure out what your truck can handle...do not go by fords towing brochure....those are not real world numbers....if you read some of the other threads you will see what I mean. for exmaple I am 1200 lbs less then what fords brochure says.

me thinks you can do it very...very short flat towing to a very local campsite only...and do it on the weekend with no traffic.

The 4.6 is a good motor but it is not capable of an 8K 5er or TT.
https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/...2010/F-150.pdf

There are a couple of configurations that will allow it but you did not provide enough info to determine...so see the chart.

I don't think I would do it. I have an older 2001 F-150 with a 4.6l. It is really short in the britches when it comes to taking off. Your newer F-150 has a little more beef there so, it probably would not be as noticable. It just bothers me to see a 1/2 truck pulling something that heavy. The brakes are not there to handle loads like this and the power is very limited with the smaller v8. I could see the 5.4 working better. Had a 5.4 in a 250and it was a good motor. I just hate seeing it rev like it does for power. Bottom line, your the one that will be driving it. Just don't get in a hurry.

I would not do it from the charts that senix gave the max recommended for your truck with a 13500 GCWR is only 8400. That rating is with the truck empty no driver/passengers or options like your 5er hitch. You also did not say if your truck is 2 wh dr or 4X4, even at that it is already over the rated weight for you truck.

Thanks Guys , i am going to give it a try The Dry weight on the 5th is 6500 its only 25 feet. i dont need to put water in it till i get to the camping site and the sewer hooks up at the site as well. so i probebly will only be about 7000lbs . My father inlaw was pulling the same 5th with his 2003 ford 5.4 with 3.31 axcel and it was only recomended for 6400 on the sticker on the door .
I think i have more truck then he has. So i am going to give it a go i have the heavy tow package and coolers built on the truck from factory as well he didnt he had to get after market .

I can understand giving it a go around...I think you will see that you need to upgrade once you have completed the trip.

Do your self a favor and stay in the right lane and give lots of room in front.

I think the braking ability will be fine though..but I am not too keen on your ability to merge and get up to speed.

I think you will understand once you have been behind the wheel with it.

Here's a link to the Ford 2010 F150 Tow Guide

2010 Ford F150 Towing

Find your truck listed on the guide and see what the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating is then subtract your truck weight including the the 5th wheel hitch that you have to install and everything that your are taking.

You will then see that you are grossly overloaded. This is incredibly dangerous, I urge you to re-think this.

You and I do not need to worry, he is in Canada. Take a while to get down here. But I do wish they would reconsider. Pretty big chance on this one.

It always amazes me when I see someone tell me they can "haul" or tow something that 3/4 tons or bigger should be doing. There is far more difference then weight ratings in a 1/2 ton verses 3/4 or 1 tons.

Fifth wheel pin weight will be at least 1000#,s all of it sitting on a semi floating rear axle with 1 wheel bearing per tire that are less then 60% of what a single bearing on a full floating rear axle that has 2 bearings 40% larger each, per side. Ever see what happens when a wheel bearing is overloaded on a half ton? Not a pretty sight. I wouldn't pull a FW of that size with any 1/2ton truck, ever. I wish the manufacturers wouldn't push the "towing limits" so high on them either.

Hey Sparky04SD, great point. I farmed for the first half of my life and we loaded things well over what they were suppose to be loaded all the time. We always paid for it later. It did not matter if it were the Big trucks or the pickups, it always came back to haunt us at the most inconvienient time. Your point on bearings is a perfect example of the difference in these trucks. A lot of people think that the F-150 is just a lighter frame and smaller motors, never realizing that most if not all components are built lighter and not able to with stand the punishment of towing and/or carrying loads. We have 2 f-150's at this household, in my opinion they are just not heavy enough to do much other than a U-haul and that was a chore. Maybe I am spoiled.
