I bought a B&M shift kit from Summit for my '99 F-150 4.6. I am second guessing myself as to install it or not. My truck has 124K miles on it. Do you think I would be ruining my transmission by installing this kit with so many miles on it? I can't decide what to do and don't know if the firmer shifting would progress the deteriation of my tranny. Any help is greatly appreciated!
my thoughts are unless you notice any problems (delayed shifting, slipping, etc) i would go for it. it bumps up the pressure and thats is why the shifts are firm. more pressure is less slippage in the clutches.
Unfortunatley, the trucks transmission has never been serviced. No tranny fluid or filter changes the whole 124K miles. Of course I will change the fluid and filter when doing the kit or even if I don't do the kit. Your explanations of how the kit works makes sense. So basically the kit does no damage to your tranny, if I'm reading it right. I wonder why trucks intended for towing and heavy duty use do not already come with an improved shifting tranny from the factory?
because the factory is wanting longevity, and comfort. they have to find a happy medium. just a heaqds up, if fluid never been changed, you might notice slippage with new fluid. i would do a fluid change then drive for 1500-2000 miles just to make sure everything is ok.
looney- You have a transmission that's currently working ok, right? And, all the components have worn in together for 124K miles, right? So now you want to modify the valve body to increase line pressures, on clutch packs with 124K miles on them. I wouldn't! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Unless, of course, you really want to rebuild the transmission.
