a new motor with new hei distributor was running- shortly- then no spark. lead going into distributor is good. It was running the motor prior to rebuild without tach hooked up.
two options for me thus far:
1. A mechanic helped and set up the tach wire when we installed the rebuild- which was also a 12 volt lead. I'm thinking, but don't know for sure, that the tach wire isn't hot??? So maybe that took out some component of the distributor??? I replaced the cap/coil w/o luck.
Hooking a tach is no biggy on hei. One wire to the terminal marked tach on the cap to the tach. The wire should not be powered , the hei sends a signal from the tach terminal to the tach wire.
As for your problem of no spark, make sure the batt terminal on the cap has 12 volts, check the two wires ( yellow and green ) from the pickup coil to the module, they sometimes break from the vacumm advance moving .Also make sure there is a ground under the little cap over top of the coil that goes into the centre terminal of the cap. Hard to explain but if its there you will know what i am speaking of.
If all that checks out take out the module and have it tested, this is really common part to fail, especially if its been changed out before and there was not enough dielectic grease put on its underside for heat transfer.
what I'm really wanting to do is get it running for my kids first day of school- it was a promise i made and I'm soooo close.
I have another hei distributor but it's for a a different motor...but the parts are exchangeable. I know i can fix it somehow this next week but...looking for a mini miracle here.
Was hoping someone might have an idea of which part could be affected by a hot tach wire...it can't be good for it i wouldn't think.
update: The module handles the signal for the tach and coil thus I think wiring the hot to the tach end of the module likely blew it- will replace module tomorrow and go from there.
Can't wait to get ahold of the "mechanic" if this ends up being the deal.
