Hey guys,
I got at 1247 code low turbo boost. I cleared the code and it hasn't come back. In the meantime, I checked the hoses and found the hose from the MAP/ MAF sensor to air manifold cracked...I repalced it. Today I removed the turbo and pedestal. I found the wastegate valve on the exhaust to be sticking. I cleaned this and sprayed it with CB Blaster. The arm freed up and works good now. MY question is the wastegate solenoid with the red vacuum line attached does this pull or push the wategate valve to open? I have to pull the rod for the valve to open. Do I have a turbo issue or is the solenoid bad? I also cleaned and lubed the rod, spring and seals on the pedastal lever installing new "O" rings as required. Any input would be greatly appreciated

You know, I never thought about whether it was vacuum or pressure activated. I always just assumed it was by pressure due to the nature of it's function. That would seem to push but your post has me thinking. I still say pressure/push. JMO. Maybe I too will learn something. Is it working/running well now?
That is a good question. I know you can activate the wastegate with about 20 lbs. shop air, but not sure if it would be opening or shutting the valve. Someone should be along soon who will know.
isn't there a vacuum line to drive something on the turbo (either WG or EBPV) that is pre-turbo. red line that goes into intake boot? to me, something there is vacuum driven seems like, plus there is a vacuum pump on the right fender well, which i thought was for AC. good question though.

There is a vacuum pump that runs the heat and air, brake booster, and ESOF on those so equipped, I think. Don't think it runs any of the items you listed such as EBV or WG. I believe the EBV is temp driven and the WG is boost regulated.
The wastegate actuator is pressure driven. Push to open, spring pressure closed. The exhaust backpressure valve is operated by oil pressure via a solenoid, pulls open pushes closed.

Thanks Scott. Now that EBV is activated via a solenoid that is signalled by what? Temp?
Thanks for the replies. I applied hand pressure via hand gauge and pumped to 25 PSI and didn't see the rod move. I connected to the wastegate solenoid which has a red vacuum line attached and goes from the manifold to the solenoid. Assuming I'm talking about the right solenoid I should see the rod move under 5 PSI. Correct? I started the Truck this morning and my check engine light came on. I now have a P1396 code. I have checked it out yet but did clear it. Continued input is greatly appreciated.
