Does anyone know of the benifits, disadvantages, headaches etc. regarding gear driven timing sets over standard chain sets? Someone had told me that the gear driven ones eliminate the stetching chain but I have not heard anything else. Same guy told me that it adds a unique sound to the motor like a blower would make? Is this a performance or stock mod? In the process of building a 302 and was just curious! Thanks all!
They tend to be noisy which in my opinion is a headache and a disadvantage. Like your friend stated there is no stretch. Unless your building a high hp motor over like 500 I'd stick with a good double roller. They're quiet and pretty reliable.
Also there are often problems setting the clearance on the gears and other technical build problems that come up. They are great for endurance racers that run in the very high rpm ranges.
Some manufacturers offer a quiet and a noisy version. The noisy version will quickly drive you up the wall, but I've heard some of the quite ones and in certain applications they're not too bad. You definitely know it's there, the term "quiet" being relative, of course. They do have a distinctive head-turning sound, so if you like mechanical noises emanating from under your hood, you may be able to live with it. I'd take an extended ride in a vehicle equipped with one before dropping one in your vehicle however as you may find that you just don't like it. (I'm putting one of the "quite" ones in my Tiger...what can I say? I like the sound! And if I find I grow tired of it after a while, it's not too big a job for me to change it out for a double roller chain.)
