Ok, so i have a 99 ranger 4.04x4, and i was stupid enugh to let the fuel get real low and by low i mean almost straned on the interstate but after filling up the tank i knowdiced that it was jurking from time to time when i was under load, that was about 2 weeks ago and it has gotten a lot worse but today it got real bad and was shuttering almost all the time and then the CEL came on and stayed on. sometimes when it was real bad the CEL would blink but mostly it stayed solid. now, i had been thinking it was the fuel filter and when i let the tank get empty it sucked up some crap but now that the CEL came on i wasent so sure, so i guess my question is can a bad fuel filter make the CEL come on? i picked up a new filter and will cange it first thing tomarrow hopefully that clears things up. sorry for the long post im just a little freaked out i just got this truck last month, thanks for any replies in advance.

After you install the filter, if the truck is running fine, disconnect the negative battery cable and then hook it back up to clear the code in the computer. If the CEL comes back on, then go to Advance or AutoZone to get the codes pulled. Then report back the findings.
While you were at the autparts store buying the filter, did you have them scan the computer for trouble codes????
If so, post all they found, if not, have it scanned & post ALL the codes!!!!
Just a guess at this point, but you may be right, that letting the fuel level get really low, has clogged the fuel filter & is causing a fuel delivery problem.
If so, it could cause the symptos you've posted & turn on the CEL.
Knowing what the codes are would help. Hopefully they are just lean codes.
If the new filter does the trick, dump some fuel injection cleaner in the gas tank and let it clean out the rest of the system.
If the new filter doesn't do the trick, then there is a chance that the fuel pump may have been damaged when the fuel level got too low. The pump uses fuel for both cooling and lubrication.
Ok, here’s an update, I spent 2 hours in the dirt trying to get the old filter off before I gave up and brought it to a shop, the mechanic there tried to get it off with no luck and ended up cutting the line and replacing it for free, he said that the filter was very very old. It ran a little better but later in the day got bad again and the CEL came back on so this morning I had a friend pull the codes and it came back with misfire on cylinder 3 code p0303 I think. so I’m going to pull the plug and have a look at it tomorrow morning and hopefully replace them, if any one has any other thoughts I would love to here them, hate having my truck run so poorly. Thanks again guys.
