A 'CEL' Machine

I just had my truck into the dealer for a CEL that turned out to be a bad EGR valve at 30k. So yesterday I 'm coming back from another desert trip and guess what? I throw another CEL! All I could think of was "WTF" this time. Another CEL less than a thousand miles after getting it fixed last month. And both CEL's tripped on the return trip home from the desert. That's 3 this year and all I can think about is "what will these cost me when we are out of warranty?" "Will the Ford extended warranty cover these?" My 3/36 warranty is up in May '13. Is it time to start looking at GM's again? I a little frusrated right now.

Your new vehicles are OBD2 compliant and alert you to a problem instead of guessing. Multiple alerts in a short period is not uncommon but the good thing is you know where to look. Welcome to the new generation of fly by wire and emissions.

If you think this problem is related to one brand of vehicle or engine, do a search of comparable vehicles or other forums so you are a well informed consumer.

What some dont realize mutiple codes at once does not mean all that is wrong, the 1st code can generate other codes. So you do need knowledge to determine what is actual failing part. The 1St hard fault.generally. it is more than pull the codes and start throwing parts at it.

Suggest you invest in a code reader. Be sure it has the Ford codes in addition to the generic ones.

Ford will still be responsible for your CEL problems beyond the 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty. For emissions related issues, you will not have to pay a deductible either. I understand your frustration, but maybe something like the Edge Insight would be a good investment so you at least know what is going on when it happens.

I need that mug for meetings!

It's annoying, really annoying, but a good dealer will take care of you.

After reading discussions here, I decided to get the extended warranty.
I may even get the basic diesel warranty before 100,000 but that will depend on if I decide to tune it instead.
That's the way it's going to be now, hybrid gassers included.
There’s no way on earth a hybrid works without major “computer” involvement for example.

In fact, everyone remember the noise Crazy's turbo produced early on?
Well mine has always made the owl sound when it gets cold (no issue there) but Sunday morning I heard the grinding noise for one second for the first time, that I can remember at least.
That can't be good but I guess oh well, I have a 100,000 warranty.
When I can reproduce it, I'll take it in.
Hopefully I'm not out in the woods with no cell service when it gives up because that's normally my luck.
I'll be courteous but stern, I want it fixed right since my turbo has always made noises.

I think everyone has forgotten GM had worse DEF issues and had to get a pass from their [at the time] lien holder.
That's just one example that came to the top of my head.
I don't keep up that much but I know for a fact GM and Dodge aren't problem free.

I have an appointment with the dealer at 8am tomorrow. Funny thing is, The 'CEL' went out tonight when I started the truck to leave work. Now I'm confused! These trucks will store the code(s) that it threw won't it? I hope so, so the deale doesn't think I crazy. Thanks for the responses!

Yes, they will store and there might be a few pending codes as well.

Sorry to hear about the trouble Rick, but I don't think any of the modern emissions controlled diesel engines are immune from issues like this.

Are all CEL codes stored once thrown?
For some reason I thought I read only certain codes are saved after the computer self corrects what it thought was an issue.
Of course, I don't know what is classified as important and non-important if the computer does clear some.

Rick, maybe this is just a sensor or two due to the erratic behavior.
Regardless of my question above, hopefully that code is stored and they'll be able to pull it tomorrow and get you back on the road soon.

You will have hard fault codes if light is on. If light has been on and went off by itself, it should be store as a memory fault code.

This has not been my experience... the "unable to learn" fuel pressure code disappears if the CEL goes out...BTDT...twice...the time they were able to catch the CEL I was only 15 miles from the dealer when the CEL came on and it stayed on until I got there...

As far as a dealer scanning the truck for free after the 3/36,000 warranty is up...not many will do this...most want the diagnostic money guaranteed...and after 3/36,000, there are many parts in the system that are not covered by Ford...not too surprising to me...

Regards

Rick. That is a stupid dang truck. As much as they try to shove how smart it it.

But obviously they dont know a diagnosis by symtom. Heck I wish I wasnt retired I can bet your sweet azz its problems would be resolved.
