There are usually two causes for this. The bulb can be installed incorrectly (forced in) and get across the bottom terminals(This usually only happens right after you install a bulb, or get a new used vehicle where someone else has), or the filaments can get jarred loose mechanically inside the bulb and fall together. The filaments falling apart is very rare, but does happen.

Glad you got it fixed. The coincidence of this happening during the stereo install was throwing me for a loop.

I did find that one of the bulbs was cracked at the base and had moister in it so i figure that that was causing the short
