1) Is there a main fuse I can pull to clear all codes to ensure I really do have an issue?
Hi and welcome to FTE! To clear the codes you can take the negative battery cable off for 15 minutes or so. Then you should be fine. But, it does sound like there is a problem. I know some places read codes for free (Autozone?). Maybe check them out.
I'd find out what code it's throwing rather than cancelling the code. It will come back and at some point start flashing when the issue is major.
02 Escapes use an obd II reader. If you buy one, get one that does CAN too such as the Equus 3030 model. My 05 Escape requires a CAN model and ALL new cars will require a CAN reader by 2008.
If you want to be cheap, let Autozone read your code. They'll give a generic fix but I'd at least Google on the code for a Ford. Some vehicles have common specific issues rather than the generic fix.
The usual culprit for either low or high EGR flow faults is the DPFE sensor. There's another recent thread that explains how to troubleshoot it. Ford changed the design because of the number of failures in the early Escapes.
It was pretty cheap and easy ($39.99 at Autozone). I replaced it in about 4 minutes and did not need any tools. It simply uplugs and slips off the 2 hoses.
