I have a 2001 ranger with a 4.0 sohc and the check engine light came on so I use my uncles car chip and it turn the light off and siad the truck was having random multiple cylinder misfires. does anyone have any ideas
You didn't by chance do any investigating, and listened and looked and molested the motor prior to just clearing the code?
Was the truck behaving in a different manner?

some *Possible Reasons*(?) could be...
-a stuck open EGR valve or passage(s) being blocked
-Or possibly being VERY Low on fuel
-And last but not least... your CMP -Camshaft Position Sensor.

when i first pluged in the chip the memory was full so it would not load anything on the computer and the check engine lite went off. so after we erased some things i pluged it back in and took if for a drive and when I got back it read the misfires. the truck runs alright it idles a little rough and does seem to slack off a little

Verify that the plug wires are properly seated. You may want to take a look under there when it is dark out to see if you can find any sparks jumping. The wires may look good but they could still be your problem. Also, look for any burned areas on the wire. I had an F-150 that I spent two months trying to figure out why I was getting spark knock and it turned out to be that I had a plug wire arcing onto one of the valve covers.
Also, verify you have the firing order correct.
Was it doing this before the plugs were replaced? Do you have the right plugs in there?? Verifed? Could there have been some confusion between the SOHC and the DOHC engines when the plugs were purchased. I had a misfire on an old Chevy truck I once owned and it turned out they sold me the wrong plugs . Took me a month or two to figure that one out also.

Yes, check the plugs and wires. On my '87 Crown Vic, they gave me plugs for GM's LS-Small Blocks. I think the car takes something like an Autolight 4525 and they gave me 2545's. Corvette spark plugs didn't help my 5.0 run any better BTW.
