Got my X yesterday and yes, the factory 6cd changer and speakers are baaaaaddddddd! Need to upgrade. I have the rear DVD player and the rear audio remotes in the lower console (but no steering wheel controls). Anyone know of any harnesses/kits/controllers that allow me to retain this controller with an aftermarket Pioneer/Alpine head unit?
How hard is it to get the X’s door panels off to change the speakers?
Or, anyone in the VA/DC/MD area have a line on a good aftermarket stereo installer?
Door panels are easy to get off. Change those speakers out to anything but stock and the sound quality will increase tenfold.
To keep the factory controls in tact, I originally used the factory radio and added an AudioControl LC8, which allows you to add amplifiers and crossovers to the existing factory system. This worked great and the sound quality increased, again, significantly.
There is a screw behind the courtesy light on the bottom, one or two underneath the power window/lock buttons and then it just pops and slides off....
There is a tech article here about changing door lock actuators that gives a very good visual of what removing the door panels looks like. It'll take you 5 minutes per door.
