yep, the 302 had to be in street cars to be on the race track. since that was the max displacement for the Trans Am racing series, everbody had a variant.
The chevy 302 is a good looking engine with 2 staggered 4 barrels. It just didn't have the low end that the ford 302 has. plus we all know what an intake and a little bit of porting can do for a ford 302.
300&302 can use the oem mounts in any ford truck i know for sure 1961-1984 I put a 351 in a 62 f i00 and a 302 in a 65 f100 the oem mounts all lined up with the frame brackets
I tried using the stock 300ci motor mount towers, but they were almost to tall i guess u could say, because when the motor was sitting on them it was still 3 inches away from the bell housing. Then i read on here that u could move them back a position on the frame but the holes didn't line up. So Im not sure if I should drill new holes or?
again, the f250 4x4 is unique up to 77 1/2. Ford never made a tower to fit a 302 into one of these. You are looking at custom fitting your towers by cutting/torching and welding/drilling them to fit. 300's are the same as an FE only. FWIW, you can do it, but the FE would be alot easier, and would have more torque and power to boot. The 302 would drop right into a 78-79 f250 4x4, or f150, but that means getting a second truck. Good luck.
would a 351 windsor be the same as the 302, because i do have one of those laying aroud the yard as well. Again the 351 windsor was introduced in 77 or 78 was it not?
Now that I know better, and in case someone google searches this swap and this thread comes up, I will say this: The 300 and FE share the same perch, but the 300 lines up in the front holes, the FE in the rear holes, they are both there, and are 2.5" across at the top bolt holes. The 300 perches changed after 1976 at some point, and became 3.38" for the top bolts, and the 351M/400 (302/351W/351C as well) perches have a 4.25" bolt spacing. This explains why the original poster couldn't just bolt them into his earlier truck, but could weld them in place if needed. I mentioned the frames on the highboy were narrower, they were, but only in the rear half. Otherwise they all shared the same dimension up front.
I swapped in a 302 from a 300 in a 76 2wd. Had to swap engine perches. One style was for the 300/and FE motors, the other would work with 302/351M/400. The 2wd perches are significantly different than the 4x4 perches. The only factory V8s in a 4x4 from 73-76 were FE 360s. The only factory V8's in 4x4s 77-79 were 351M/400. I regret swapping in a 302 for a 300 as there wasn't enough torque gain. Eventually the 302 came out in favor of a 390.
The 351W didn't show up in F series Pickups until the 80s. The 351M was the only factory 351 used in 77-79 pickups. Of course the 351W was used in cars since the late 60s.
