My 1999 Ford Expedition with 190,000 miles started making a clunking sound when under load on my way back from a long (7,000 miles) vacation dragging a boat.
I took it to a tranny shop and they are pretty sure it's the transfer case. I guess it's believable that it might need work after so many miles. Does anyone else agree, and what would the cost of a new (rebuilt) transfer case be?
Besides tires and brakes which are almost due, the truck runs great and I'm not liking the price of new ones, so I'm leaning towards repairing. Any advice?
I recently replaced my transfer case with a used one at a local tranny shop. The used part cost me $450 and the shop charged me somewhere around $300 to pull the old and replace with the used one.
Mine will start to make a little clunking, like the A4WD is engaging, when the fluid gets old. I tow a lot and have to replace the fluid every 15-20k. After the change the clunk is gone for another 15-20k.
