Pulled my code RE: CEL - came up as a 1442 - Evac type of code - He told me to try replacing the gas cap first... ok... that would be great, if it solved it, but what else could it be?
P1442 Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected
Could be as simple as changing the gas cap, or it could be one of the EVAP lines are loose on the top of the gas tank, loose from the canister, etc. Try the gas cap first, they are ~$5 from the dealer.
What is the most expensive thing it could be? The previous owner said that this has happend for a while, and they will clear the code, and it takes like a month or so for it to re-appear - does that help you, help me? -
Yeap - Gas Cap from Dealer is on my short list, along with a new **** for the lights - Guy was using a pair of plyers to turn them on and off.
Well my experience of the EVAP system comes from my Mustang GT and when my mother-in-law ran over an object in the road, that an 18 wheeler avoided. My experience, crushed the 5/8" stainless lines between the canister and the gas tank and ripped the hoses out of the canister. To have this damage fixed at the dealer would have cost her ~$600 (the stainless line came as an assembly with brake and fuel lines also), I fixed it for under $100 but I used connections from my vendors (oil and gas industry) to get me 5/8" tube and unions (for free) so I could just cut away the crushed parts and tie in new tube. Aside from this assembly, the canister and the associated hardware are the most expensive.
But, if the previous owner says that they were able to reset it and it would stay off for a month or more, then it sounds like a gas cap issue. BTW, the EVAP system for the most part is for emissions only (there is a part that helps with pressurization of the fuel tank).
So, fixing this, will not make any difference in performace or miliage? of course, with it on, it would fail an inspection :-) So, I'll just have it cleared everytime I need to get it inspected.
The only bad thing about that, is "the light that cryed wolf" situation. - if I ignore the CEL, something else more serious could cause it to light, and I'd never know -
I guess if the truck runs fine, shifts perfect, and gets the same gas mileage, why worry about it, right?
i am not sure where the canister is located on the explorer. i would think its somewhere on the fire wall near one of the fenders, but not real sure.
I would replace the gas cap, if it still comes on after that, then you have to weigh your options about where to go next on getting it fixed. You are right, you do not want the SES on all the time b/c it may mask other problems that arise.
Replace the gas cap. It has always corrected the problem when I have had this code. You don't say what year your vehicle is but I had to replace the caps on my vehicles at around 10 years old. Di my 96 Explorer last year and my daughter's 97 Ranger this year. Did my old 93 F-150 (no longer own it) about three or four years ago.
