What should I look for to find out why this is not working? What usually goes bad? Should I just go ahead replace the whole thing? If so, how hard is it on this year of pickup?
Which engine and tranny? Sometimes the cable can just be loose. If you have an AOD, the cable goes in near the rear/top of the tranny. With an E4OD, the cable runs to the rear differential. Otherwise, you may just need to replace your clockspring (do a search, many have described the process at one point or another, I haven't ever had to do it, so I won't try to explain).
Thanks for responding! I found the problem. I looked under the truck to see where it goes into the transmission and immediately saw the problem. The cable has been laying on the exhaust pipe which melt the housing and charcoaled the cable core. I removed the cable and went looking for a new one. Thanks again!
