The odometer in my 1996 4.0 4wd explorer has quit, the speedometer still works fine, are these two separate systems and where should I look for what is broken?
Thanks for any help.
Your odometer assembly literally screws into the Speedometer control board its self. It is sort of a separate unit but the motor that drives the Odometer plugs directly into the Speedometer control board.
To get to it you will need to take apart the gauge cluster, remove the needles and the face. It is very trying and takes alot of patience and a very careful touch. The needles are sensitive and tricky to get back on in their proper position.

I would first check your wire connections in the back of the Gauge cluster and at your GEM (behind the radio) before venturing to disassemble your cluster.
Taking the cluster apart is not for the faint of heart. But if you are really set on it I can tell you exactly how to do it.
