Problems with prespective buy

Problems with prespective buy
So a friends' father has a 80's diesel truck, 4x4, quad cab, 3spd, but he claims it only gets 8miles to the gallon. What's the possibility making this engine work ? I'd consider using it as a parts truck for a swap into an eariler quad cab.

Need a little more info.

If he was pulling large loads and has low gearing with a C6 automatic, I could see 8 MPG.

Yeah, I agree with big Dave.
Automatic + 4x4 + bigger gear ratios + towing = stinky mileage.

It's 3spd manuel on the floor, dually, 4x4 that he drove all winter and it got like 8.

Wonder what transmission is in it?
Never seen a 3 speed manual behind a diesel.

it ism most likely a granny first 4 speed, and he is calling it a 3 speed

It's not, i'm almost tottally sure it's a 3-spd.

Or a four speed with a busted a gear.

If that is the case, that could be why the mileage is down.
