quad exhaust

whats the pros and cons of a quad exhaust on a 5.0? i noticed the new 5.0 mustangs have them but what about a older 5.0 truck? what would the gains be versus true duals? how exactly do you run a quad exhaust? ive been searching and cant find much on quad exhausts.

what do you do? run true duals into two si/do mufflers or what?

Yes, they are just that, single in dual out mufflers. No real gains to be had, its just looks.

I used 2 Ravin' 3" in/dual 2.5" out Z-55 mufflers behind my 400 Dodge, I had 4 tail pipes on it, 2 in front of each tire at 45 degree exits. It looked good but droned bad, my guess is the dual 2.5" tailpipes on each muffler were a tad much for the system, as it sounded pretty close to the same with the mufflers dumped under the box.

3" would be too much for my stock 5.o i would think. what size pipes would you use on a 5.0 with headers? 2.5" duals into a si/do muffler with 2.25" tails? i was thinking two out at 45 degree angles at my bed or two out the back and two out at the bed corners?

I wouldn't go over 2.25" from the headders. The tailpipes, 2" is more then enough. I would exit the 2 on each side as that would just look better.

I think by the very nature of this post, that the entire point of the quad exhaust has been missed. Ford designed the system mostly for function, and that function is that it is loud at WOT but mellower at idle, enough to satisfy most noise ordinances. From what I can tell, exhaust only flows out the side exhausts under heavy throttle to produce more noise.

So lets lay this out. There are almost no real world pros to a true dual other than looks. On a car they sound great, but due to balance issues, the sound is not as perfect on a truck. The exhaust scavenges more efficiently on a single, thats why most better dual system s have to have h-pipes or x-pipes. That is just to regain some of what is lost on the single system.

A better approach is to use a single dual outlet muffler. This produces good sound, but without the drawbacks of a true dual.
