Hello everyone. I have a 2000 F-250 supercab 4X2 with the 7.3L PSD, and 6 spd. tranny (I think that covers the truck description), and have recently developed a leak from the water pump that is best compared to a constantly fast dripping water faucet. I doubt there is anything I can do to help short of replacing the pump, and was wondering how difficult this would be to do, and also how much money am I looking at for a new pump and where would be the cheapest place to get one.
Haven't had to do one myself yet but there is lots of information here on doing it. You must like the idea of changing them though if you are going to shop around for the cheapest one. Probably get one at a junkyard for next to nothing, but it will probably start leaking next week. But no problem because by then you will have had a lot of practice.
Well, I don't know about all of that. I don't think he meant cheap as in POS water pump, but maybe perhaps a discount or wholesale seller source. Isn't that what we do here? fix our own rigs?
Anywhooo, there have been a lot of posts here on this topic. Do a search, or stand by. The good folks here will advise on where to obtain a quality piece at a fair price. I've not yet replaced mine. Good Luck.
Around $400-$450 is about the average price for a PSD WP - lots of places to get one on-line or local parts stores.
It's a good idea to also plan on replacing the following items @ the same time: 1. Upper & lower Rad hoses (esp if you still have the one that runs "through" the Serp belt) 2. Thermostat housing & gasket (notorious leak spot) 3. Serp belt (Ya got it off anyway why not??) 4. Make sure your new pump comes with all new bolts or order them @ the same time. (don't re-use them they have a nasty habit of breaking the 2cnd time around) 5. Get a New T-Stat
Also, if you have the Ford Service CD don't use the listed torque values on the pump bolts - they'll snap. Use 15-18 ft/lbs
The hardest part of the whole job is getting the !@##*#@)* FAN OFF!!!! After that it's all down hill. Only other area that seems to give eveyone fits is the WP gasket - be careful, check it carefully and it'll be fine.
Yes.... Do a search. You'll find several threads on how to change it.
Hardest part to me was getting the big nut loose that holds the fan on.
You'll need a strap wrench to hold the pulley.
Where ever you buy the water pump....Don't buy from the dealership... Way to high.
Buy a good quality one with a lifetime warrenty from an autoparts store.

Thanks.
I just got finshed doing mine. Not really all that difficult if you are handy with tools. The fan is a pita. I bought a strap wrench from Sears. Not the cheap plastic one but the cast aluminum one in a plastic case. Cost about 20 bucks. You will need a good strap wrench. The nut on the fan IIRC is 1 7/16. I used a snap on 3/8 crows foot with a 3 foot piece of pipe. Besides the hoses, I would also look into a coolant filter and 203 degree t-stat and billet housing. If you dont go that route, by the housing and hardware from your local IH dealer. Way cheaper than Ford. I bought an aftermarket Airtex pump from a local parts place. It is listed on e bay cheaper, but just in case for warantee issues I got it locally. When you unpack your new pump, before you start to disassemble your truck lay out the rubber gasket in the sun. It will "go back" to its original shape and make the install way easier. Now is also a good time to clean out your radiator and intercooler. I used plain water on the radiator and Simple Green in the intercooler. I stood the intercooler up on end to drain overnight. The fins on my intercooler were so packed with junk I could barely see light throught it. EGT is lower now as well. One last trick, on reassembly, I used some brush on Permatex form a gasket on the intercooler boots before I tightened the clamps. That alone was worth about 4-5 PSI boost. If you need any further help let us know. Good luck

I got mine from Carquest. I replace the T-stat and housing, while doing it. The hardest part can be the fan clutch nut. The fan nut should be a 1 7/8 nut. What I did is removed a couple bolts holding the pully on. I took a piece a steel bar stock, about a 1/4 in thick, 1" wide and about 30 " long and drilled a hole in it about 3" from the end. I then used the bolt from the waterpump pulley and screwed the bar stock on the pulley. It ends up working like a spanner wrench,as you rotate the fan nut the bar stock will jam up and hold the pulley and allow the nut to break free. I did not marr anything up doing it this way. I also had to use a dead blow hammer striking the wrench to get it to break free. Some of the old Ford manual have the torque of the waterpump bolts at 35 lbs-ft. That is wrong it should be 18 lbs-ft, and remember where the bolts go there are 3 different sizes.
i just did mine last week. $110.00 for a reman. at napa. the fan clutch is the only real PITA (as has been said) to get mine off i took a C-clamp and clamped to the top of the water pump pulley than used a pipe wrench on the bolt on the fan. the clamp rotated a little until it contacted the heater hose housing (comming out the top of the water pump) than i was able to loosen the bolt. getting it back on is also a pain as well
i got my pump on ebay for $130. the install took 3 hrs, excluding the damned fan clutch. its been 6k miles since the install and no leaks yet. you should take this opp to get 203* thermostat as well.
