harmonic balance

harmonic balance

Is their any way to check if a harmonic balance is still good without spin testing for balance?

Do you mean the dynamic balance of a crank, or the condition of a harmonic damper? Harmonics and balance are two different things- as long as the flywheel and and balancer are still correct for the crankshaft, it should have a decent balance to it. All the damper does is absorb harmonic vibrations running along the crankshaft. If that goes out, usually you can see the rubber seperator between the inner and out rings hanging out, or the timing marks will be way off.

balance

I'm talking about the harmonic balance that gets bolts to the front of the crankshaft. The rubber looks ok, and I haven't ran it to see if the timing marks are moving. Just didn't know wether to replace it while it is off or if it is still OK.

Generally, if you have a question about it, you should replace it. On mine, if I pull it and the rubber strip is starting to hang out, or is bulged out, cracked, not even, I will replace the damper.

The engine is a 73 429, mating it to a C6 4x4 in a 79 250. Should I change the flywheel if I'm going to change the balance? I saw summit sells both in a kit
