I am completing a power steering conversion on a '69 F100. It has a 240 six. I got the pulley/balancer assembly off a '77 300 six. I have recently read that you shouldn't use the 300 balancer on a 240 because of differences in the balancers and that engine damage will result if you do. I know plenty of you guys have done conversions. Has anyone heard of this or had any problems using the 300 balancer? If my only option is to obtain a three pulley balancer off a 240, I think I will be looking for a rare bird. On top of which, I do not know of an easy way to tell the difference between the two engines other than the old dowel in the sparkplug hole trick (which can give questionable results and is a pain when cruising the junkyard). Any thoughts or advice are appreciated.
You might try reposting this in the Six Cylinder conference. There are quite a few guys there who may be able to help you. I own a '68 F-100 with a 300, non A/c converted to A/c, but I don't know about the differences in the balancers. I hope someone may be able to help you out. If not on this message board, you can also try the board at:
