I'm in the middle of a conversion from a 351 to a 400 and the 400 harmonic balancer is no longer made. I understand that the balance weight is the same, but the two may be different in thickness.
Does anyone know if the 351 balancer will work on my 400 if I use the 351 brackets and pulleys? Or, will I need to add a spacer between the balancer and the crank pulley to line everything up?
Thanks for the help! Everything lined up great. Got the engine in the truck and it would only turn half a turn. Pulled it back out and found that the lever type clutch was hitting the throwout bearing. The parts store couldn't get a diaphram type pressure plate like I originally had for 5 days! They had already sent back my 351m flywheel core so I couldn't go back to what I had and the old 12" pressure plate has a different bolt circle. After a lot of research in the parts book it looked like a 460 12" clutch set would work. Got it on and reinstalled the engine - cranks over freely now. Just have to put in the radiator tomorrow and fire it up!
Oh, the conversion blues! Makes life more interesting and auto restoration more challenging.
