I need some help from the list. 97 expedition 4*4 w/5/4 L . My expedition on two different times have had brake failure. You try to stop at a stop light and the brake pedal literally goes to the floor and brakes makes a grinding sounds. After the truck stops and you are through the intersection the brakes are normal again. I checked each rotor to inspect pads and fluid leaks and looks O.K. The last time was a close call so took truck to dealer to have checked out and was told I needed a new left front hub (Code C1158). What does the hub have to do with the ABS and wheel sensor. Can you not just replace the sensor. Also, Why would Ford have a system that when it gets a spike or out of sequence pulse from the wheel sensor would activate the ABS instead of disconnecting for normal braking. Both of these near acidents was at speeds below 30 mph. Thanks for all your help in this matter.
Jim
my wife wrecked our 2002 dodge ram quad cab on march 1 2006, I had had the exact same problem bro, and I just let the time pass by, and one day she called me and told methat the brake pedal had gone to the floor, she couldn stop, and crossed and intersection and got hit in the side by a Chevy caprice, (OLD POLICE CAR) thank god nobody was hurt, please pay attention to it, it could lead to a very tragic event....
Jim,
I also have a 97 expie (with 210K miles) and just today my brake pedal goes down and makes a grinding noise as well as a noise like air is excaping from around the brake pedal. Did anyone offer is suggestions to your forum posting?
regards,
during braking, if the wheel speed drops to zero or is drastically lower than the other wheels then the abs will activate because it thinks that a wheel is locked up and hence the noise you hear. the hub has to be replaced because on 4x4s the bearing and speed sensor assembly is a complete unit whether you get it from ford or aftermarket.
cecil little it sounds like your describing a booster issue. get someone to listen under the hood or see if you feel anything in the pedal when the noise happens
