yeah you pretty much sumed it up, not sure exactly how much but i think 5-6 quarts, correct me if im wrong. how bout a shift kit while you have the pan off
In my opinion changing all of the fluid is more important than changing the filter, but it does not hurt to change the filter, too. Ford has a spec on how often to change the fluid, but no spec on ever changing the filter.
Here's how I change my fluid, and it has an optional step to change the filter, too.
Well..Got it done today..Piece of cake..Took 8 qts to fill back to full..

you can get another 2 or 3 quarts of fluid out of the torque converter. It has a drain plug on it, spin it until you see the plug. This should get you close to 10 quarts of fluid to drain. Make sure you feel up inside the filter hole to make sure the old filter gasket comes out. And there are 2 different lengths of filter snouts even though the actual filter is exactly the same. Mine takes the short snout, but my pan won't fit back with the long snouted filter. But if your tranny takes the long snout, and you accidently install the short snouted filter you may not get fluid pick-up.

The torque converter holds about 8 quarts, not 2 or 3.
The original poster has a 2002, and chances are there is no drain plug on the torque converter. Ford stopped installing drain plugs just after the start of 2002 production. Only the first few 2002s have a drain plug on the converter.
I just drove the EX around today after thinking it was full. I had to add another 1 1/2 qts for a total refill of 9 1/2 qts!! Is this Normal
I just replaced the filter and Mercon..No TC change as there was no drain plug.
The reason I did not do the flush is I just had it done at the dealership 7k ago and I just wanted to change the filter and look at the metal magent for any problems. No problems and very little metal flakes on the magnet.
The dipstick reads just over the hash marks know when it is idling hot.
I'm not sure if this made a difference or not, but the EX had not been driven for about 5 days before doing the tranny change. It sat in my driveway. I did not warm the fluid up. I just started removing the bolts etc. I did look at the level of the fluid when the EX was cold and not running. It was in between the "IF and IN" words on the dipstick, which is way above the hash marks, but I think the level goes down when the engine is on.
plz correct me if I am wrong as I can easily drain some out if you guys think it is over full.

I've always used the return line method and replaced the entire dumped (and measured ) amount by volume. And I think it was about 19 quarts or so for the 4R100 behind my V10. Anyone else use this method?
When you only change 10 quarts aren't you leaving behind the other half?

yes, but I was told once that the factory suggestions for changing the fluid take into account the 6-10 quarts that are changed. Every third change I go to a pump it out place and have them exchange all the fluids. Normally I drop the pan and drain the tq converter myself.
Could you describe the return line method and how to do this. I need to change my Excursion trans fluid and would like to remove as much fluid as possible, but don't want to miss a step and damage the transmission.
i heard that doing a complete fluid exchange is bad and causes problems sometimes. anyone heard of this? i mean changing the brake fluid and transmission fluid was'nt brought up until recently??....like within the last 15 years?
