Trans filter 4R100 - Is the safety clip used to hold filter up?

On my previous 1992 F-350, when I serviced the E40D 2WD trans I replaced the filter during a trans service. I read about some filters falling down inside pan causing shifting issues. There is an aftermarket clip sold that holds the filter in the up position and prevents it from falling into pan.

Is the clip also used on the 2WD 4R100? is it the same issue of potentially falling down in pan as was the case with the E40D?

Preparing to service my 2003 F-350 2WD 4R100 and install a new filter and want to be sure I have all parts/supplies ready to go.

Thanks

If you have the right filter the clip isn't necessary.

Agreed..use a motorcraft filter and make sure its seated correctly and you wont need the clips.

however, if you insist on using the clips, Superior transmission parts makes the clips

Using the Motorcraft filter there is a orange ring that holds it in. Images are from a 4wd but should be similar. I also included a link with pictures on how to flush using Mark K's method.

All 4R100s (Except the Lightning) use the 4x4 filter. E4ODs had a different filter for 4x2, 4R100 does not.

I only use motorcraft filter BUT I've been using the safety clip since the truck was brand new. Had one in my 1997 f250 heavy duty and when I bought my 2004 it was the first thing I ordered.

Great, got it!

Yes, I purchased the correct filter by Motorcraft YC3Z7A098BA
Yes, I purchased the correct fluid by Motorcraft....Mercon V

I have an extra clip (same one as posted in image above) but will NOT use it if not needed.

I have used Mark's trans fluid exchange method on my E40D and it worked perfect!

Your method appears a little different than the method I used on my '92 E40D, perhaps due to me having the torque converter drain plug the pumping through lines was not necessary.

Questions:

1. I have not checked for a Torque Converter drain plug on my 2003 4R100 but there is a rubber plug/cover in the same spot where my E40D (2WD) trans had one and it did have a TC drain plug. Is it possible it has one?

2. Was there an issue with the E40D filter slipping down into pan? I used the clip when I first serviced the E40D as I was new to servicing a trans and read several posts about this E40D issue. Posts were on several Ford truck forums.

3. Is the trans pan gasket the same gasket for the 5R110 AND 4R100? I had purchased a trans gasket for 2005 E450- motorhome (now sold) with 5R110 but never installed. I just noticed it has the SAME part # as the gasket for my 2003 4R100?

4. Can I check for trans fluid flow the same way I checked on my E40D? .... which was to remove rear-most trans line, attach a clear hose to trans line, point into a bucket, start and run engine for 15 secs (after full fluid escape starts....I used two buckets...one to start flow and a second one I switched to once flow was solid with no air)..... If less than 20 oz (I believe) there is a restriction....but where on a 4R100?....Radiator or somewhere else? On my E40D it was the radiator. Replaced and all was well. Learned all of this from Mark K....who was extremely helpful and always spot on with advice (Thanks Mark!). I don't anticipate restriction, but want to be prepared as much as possible. I plan on installing a ScanGaugeII to monitor trans temps, as the factory dash trans gauge may or may not be as accurate.

5. If I plan on adding a either a 6.0L trans cooler OR a Tru-Cool by LONG #4739..... is it best to do trans service after the cooler is installed?

Thanks!

NOPE... DO NOT use mercon V fluid in this transmission. Use normal Mercon fluid.

I do not believe Mercon is manufactured any longer. I believe it was replaced by Mercon V.

Mercon V replaced mercon, mercon v is the proper fluid.

If it has a drain plug it was added after the truck was built. Ford stopped installing drain plugs in August, 2001.

You need 32 ounces in 15 seconds. The routing for a 4R100 is identical to the E4OD.

It is accurate, just not useful. It will read right in the middle of normal when the trans is warmer than 50F and colder than 230F.

DO use MERCON V. It is the right fluid for this trans. MERCON is no longer manufactured. There are many fluids that say they are for use in a trans that specified MERCON. A manufacturer can take ANY fluid and say it is for that use. To have a MERCON V license they have to have Ford approve the fluid.

Thanks Mark!

Mark, would you use the trans filter clip or not? If not, why?

No, I wouldn't, because I'm and engineer and we don't use extra parts. It's much more elegant to use the minimum number of parts.

Seriously, I don't see the need for the clip. If it's the right filter (most parts stores call it a 4x4 filter) then the pan will hold it in place. It can't fall out without pushing out the bottom of the pan.
