My baby is a straight 6 - 4.9L F150 Custom 4x4. She wont blow cold air out. Sounds like the compressor kicks on when i put it on MAX AC, but it never gets cold. Should I try some of that UV dye to look for leaks and if I dont find one is it safe to use one of those self converter kits from NAPA and charge up?

have you tried to add freon? When you mentioned conversion I presume you still have R-12. If you want to convert to 134 I would suggest reading up on the process. there are forums dedicated to ac http://www.autoacforum.com/
Hope this helps
The charge-port fittings on the high-side & low-side are different for each of these refrigerants and mixing these 2 creates a volitale condition!!!
The gauges are refrigerant-specific...there is a REASON for this!
If your truck is a '91 Ford it ISusing R134a. Look for a sticker on the accumulater, compessor, or call a parts store.
If the compressor comes on you some have refrigerant in the system. This means neither the high or low pressure cutout switches have been activated. These 2 prevent damage to the system...too much pressure is dangerous and too little means the components are not receiving any oil circulated with the refrigerant!!!
I cannot find ANY DIY kits at ANY parts store that will attach to my '91, I looked at them all, they all $UCK!
Usually for around $100 an EPA certified shop can hook up your system, pull a vaccum on it, do a leak test, and have you on the road in less than 1 hour!!!
