I have a 390 in my 65 truck .The heater hose goes thu the carb spacer
my holley seems like it is percolating a little .runs great otherwise.
ive changed the needle seat assembly. Some engines have the spacer bypassed has anyone had this problem before?
beenthere32,
The purpose of that spacer is to heat the carb base to avoid carb icing and for better fuel vaporization in cold, damp conditions. Typically is was plumbed in series with the heater core, and also inline was the heater water cutoff valve. The theory being that if you had the heater on, if was probably cold enough to benefit from heating the carb base. Heater off, no carb base heating.
If you are getting rid of this plate, I am looking for one for a 4 barrel. You can email me at bhabben@juno.com
Thanks,
Brett
I have a 390 in my 65, but mine never had the spacer you speak of. I've got an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake on mine, and a Moroso carb spacer. No percolation in my holley. So if you want to pull it off, pull it, unless you have really cold weather where you're at.
I had one of those spacer plates with the hose fittings on it
on my 390 when it had the motorcraft 4 barrel on it.The heater hose
also ran over the choke and was held in place with a bracket before going into the spacer.I think the purpose of this was to heat up the choke so it would open quicker, and pre-heat the mixture for pollution. When I switched to an Edelbrock Performer 600 cfm,I re-routed the heater hose and blocked off the inlet and outlet of the spacer plate. The spacer plate is still needed or else the throttle linkage hits the manifold.I was too cheap to spend the money for an Edelbrock spacer plate.Truck runs fine, even in cold weather.
