Question Carb Gasket Question

Hi, hopeing you Guys will have an answer for this. I have a Performer manifold/ 600 Holley setup on my 390, along with a 4 hole 1" thick alum spacer. The surface of the manifold where the 4 hole spacer sits isn't very wide, looks to be maybe 1/8" or so, what kind of gasket would you Guys recomend? Right now there's a paper/fiber gasket between man/spacer, and spacer/carb. The upper gasket ( spacer/carb ) setup looks right to me, but I'm kind of leary of the bottom setup ( man/spacer ) due to the thin edge of the man mounting area. Any suggustions? Many thanks, Al

Edelbrock has a plate that you can get but since you are running the 1" spacer, you don't really need it. A Mr.Gasket open plenum gasket (#54 I think) will work fine between the intake and spacer plate.

Or just make your own out of hi-temp gasket sheet material. Works for me. You dont necessarily have to make it just the same shape as the flanges it bolts in between. It can be wider.

You could also try silicone gasket, easy to make but takes a bit of time to dry.

Silicone aint as good as an actual gasket. Its never good to have silicone sucked into yer motor. Besides, the heat from the EGR (if this truck has it) will burn up that silicone up quick.

You can get different levels of heat resistance for the silicone, but i'm just a rookie mechanic suggesting something.

I would never use silicon on a gasket that comes in contact with fuel. It can break down and get sucked into the engine!!

LX is exactly right. Silicone will disolve. If you are having problems and have to use a sealant: "Hylomar", it is specifically engineered for gasoline exposure.

Alz Ryde; Can you give us a report on how your engine responds to adding the 4-hole spacer? I'm about to buy a 1" and 2" 4-hole spacer for my 410 CS with auto and 3.54 gears. Thanks, Carl......................................o&o>.... ........................................

Hey Beemer Nut, the spacer has allways been on the truck so I don't know how it would run without it. I know it has a bunch of low end torqe, this thing will really lug down low. Don't know if this is what you wanted to know. The engine is a 390 with 600 Holley on a Performer man, Isky 256/262 SuperCam, dual Flowmasters w/ stock manifolds in a heavy '63 Ford 4x4. A truck engine as opposed to something for high RPM's. Al

Alz Ryde, I've been running a Performer for years on the 410, alot of low end torque also but runs out of suds above 4,200. This is with 427 LR heads, 670 carb, Thorley headers with X and 2 1/2" to 4 1/2" at bumper exhaust. Cams 270/290 CJ with 2 1/2 degree advance. I have a F-427 intake that i'll install and wanted to try a 1" 4-hole to a 2" 4-hole phenolic spacer. I can taste a 484 in the future but I have to line up the wheel barrels of money first. Thanks again, Carl. ...................o&o>.................
