I have a 74 250 with a 390 in it I need a spacer for the carb so the linkages will not hit the intake manifold. I was thinking about puting a 2'' four hole aluminum spacer. Think I should go with the 1'' or 2''.
Check the clearence to your hood before you decide. I am not sure which air cleaner you have, but take come clay, PlayDough, or even a wad of aluminum foil and place it on top of the air cleaner and close the hood. The crushed height will tell you how far you can safely go. Allow extra clearence for normal engine torquing/frame flexing. Not sure what the advantage of going to a taller spacer would be, but I would have to guess that diverting any additional space to a taller air cleaner would be more bennificial.
I'd consider the plastic type and start with 1". They are cheap and easy to change. The plastic give better heat insulation and that helps with power. Stay with the 4 hole design if that matches up with the intake and carb (if stock, it should).
[font color=red size=2]I have a 390 with a factory cast 4v manifold and an Edelbrock carb. I needed some clearance for the carb linkage, so I put on an aluminum spacer, big mistake... The aluminum gave me major perculation problems. So I pitched the aluminum spacer and got a plastic 1" spacer with the 4 separate holes from a parts store for about $15 and it cured the perculation. I was also told that the 4 hole design is better for low end torque. I would get a plastic 4 hole one, if I were you.
