k I got a 75 ford with a 390 and a 650 Edelbrock. I am looking to buy a spacer for it could anyone tell me what one would be best? and fairly inexpensive. I was thinking a 1" because i dont know if i will have room for much more with the edelbrock air cleaner on it and the large airfilter. I was just trying to figure out the difference between the open spacers and the 4 holed spacers. Could somone inform me on which one would be better for my set up and maybe some info on the differences? thanks
What is the reason for a spacer? Are you having trouble clearing something?
If you have the 4 small venturi's on the carb use the 4 hole spacer otherwise use the fully open spacer. Get a spacer that is just tall enuf to clear what you are trying to accomplish
if you have a dual plane intake (which you probably do!) you should get the 4 hole spacer. The dual plane intake separates the 2 sides of the carb so that as each cylinder draws air, it alternates between each side of the carb. if you use an open spacer, you will create a bridge between each side. The spacer does 2 things, 1) it reduces heat to the carb and 2) it can increase tourque a little bit due to the larger intake volume. but with larger intake volume, fuel vapor has more time to fall out of suspension. Since the FE has huge intake volume, you probably dont need a spacer unless you want it for clearance issues. Anyway, my 2 cents is to get the thinest 4 hole spacer you can find. Napa has a good selection, the mr. gasket spacers are generally pretty thick.
I've always been told that the 4 holes spacer helps for low end torque and the open spacer is for higher rpm motors. Be sure to get a plastic one, it's cheaper and will help keep the carb cooler - that will make it drive and start better in the warm weather. My 1" plastic 4 hole spacer was under $20 from Jegs.
