Wiring Harness Hell

I bought a new 2004 F250 diesel Fx4 in June '04, and I've been in wiring harness hell ever since. If you haven't had this problem, you're very lucky. You cannot remove your foot from the brake pedal when idling through a parking lot, because if this devil rears its ugly head, the vehicle will accelerate by itself.

It's been "fixed" four times, the first when it was only six months old. It now has 25k miles. The entire wiring harness was replaced BEFORE the recall. That one lasted about 8000 miles. The last time they fixed it, they put black tape on it (so-called Scotch 33+ to people in the electrical industry), which is NOT suited for this environment.

Any suggestions on what I should buy when my lawyer is through with them?

You are having service department issues more than any other issue. Find another Ford service department with a trained 6.0 Diesel Technician and you will get your truck repaired properly.

You should also leave the lawyer references out as that serves no purpose here other than to 'stir the pot', unless that is your intention. Do you want your truck fixed?

Au contraire... This might have been a dealer competence issue initially (in finding the actual problem), but it's definitely not anymore. It has now been repaired by two large dealerships, and they are replacing the same components over and over.

One mechanic showed me how he could lightly touch the wiring harness in a certain spot, and the vehicle would immediately die. He replaced the entire wiring harness, and now it's doing it again 8000 miles later. How is that his fault?

Am I trying to "stir the pot"? I'm not sure, but I do know from this experience that a lawyer seems to be the only thing to get the attention of Ford Customer Relations.

Do I want this truck fixed? This vehicle is a lemon by any definition. I just want it out of my driveway. I think Ford sees the inevitable, that's why they tried to fix it this time with electrical tape.

I bought my first Ford truck when I was 15 years old, and I've never owned anything else. I'm simply trying to find out if the 2006 models are subject to this problem, because I have to do something with the $44k that Ford is going to have to shell out.

You did not simply ask about the '06 in your first post. But, it appears to be the best of the crop.

In regards to your potential legal activities please refrain from sharing your experience here as it is expressly against our guidelines...which you will find here:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/guidelines.html

Thanks and good luck with your truck.

If they are replacing the same components over and over, I would be concerned about their skills. The harness had a chafing issue and if it's not replaced properly, that will continue to happen. Does the repair paperwork show this recall being performed?

Safety Recall 05S34, 2004 F-SuperDuty, Excursion and Econoline:
Affected vehicles are 2004 F-SuperDuty/Excursions built between 9-29-03 and 5-31-04, and Econolines built between 12-9-03 and 5-28-04. On all F-SuperDuties/Excusrsion the FICM harness will be inspected for chafing/damage. If damage is found, the harness will need to be replaced (estimated less than 2% of vehicles will require this action). If no damage is found a harness protection kit will be installed. On these trucks built between 12-1-03 to 5-31-04 the ICP sensor connector will be replaced due to the possibility of a poor crimp on the factory connector terminals. The Econolines covered under this recall only get a replacement ICP sensor connector.
Revised 7-6-05: The F-Series and Excursions will have the FICM harness part number inspected. If the harness has a tag with "C97" on it, no FICM harness repair is necessary.

You may also wish to read the following info which is directly related to the issue your truck is experiencing:

Hey... Sorry about that. I certainly wasn't trying to "organize." I read those guidelines at one time.

Those were great links. The pictures are very helpful. Thanks.

The ICP connector was replaced a year ago when the recall came out by the better of the two local dealers, and it was replaced again last week by the dealer where I bought the truck. That's just one of the repeat repairs.

Oddly, my "new" FICM harness does not look like the one in the picture, with all the protective corregated (convolute?) plastic on it. It does have the pieces on the back of the connectors, though.

After looking at the pictures and reading the repair descriptions, here's the alarming part: The problem wasn't the FICM harness at all. It was the other harness (I think it's called the engine sensor harness in that tech note). It originally shorted where it crosses the frame of the (oil?... fuel?) filter housing on top of the engine. The edge of that housing where the harness sits is really sharp. You can feel it with your finger under the harness. And that's where it's now mysteriously wrapped in electrical tape, even though (according to the work order) they didn't work on that.

I don't feel one bit better.

Just wanted to share......... I am still going through this. With out bringing up issues that don't need to be here I have had 2 EGRs, 2 EBP sensors, A PCM, A FICM and a #8 injector replaced over the last 5 months. The military moved me across country and I can't seem to get the problem fixed. I know the frustration too!!!!!!!

I think the links posted above will help me with the service dept. one more time. wish me luck and thanks to all.
