Allright, i need someone that really knows their old ford stuff. I'm trying to figure out what the difference is between a flywheel off of a 300-6 and a 390 V8. I know they're both neutrally balanced and have the same crank pattern, but all the parts houses have them as different part numbers.
Is it a thickness deal, and if so would I be able to swap from one to the other with a minimum of fuss or is this a no-go?
I'm wanting to put a 300 flywheel onto a 390 so i can use a clutch setup that I already have (i know the clutch'll swap, but i need to keep everything mated). Otherwise i guess the car is staying on blocks until i get the cash for a clutch. . . .
I have both flywheels but digging them out is going to take more work than I have time for right now.
One thing I can think of that might be different is the tooth count on the flywheel. Maybe you can search for the number of teeth each flywheel has and get closer to answering your question.
I do have to stop by a buddys house and he knows his FE motors so maybe he can answer your question.
I have a 390 wheel around, but i scrapped my old 300 one about a week ago (oh well).
I know the 300 truck flywheel is a 164 tooth count, and I also know that I'm using a 300-6 truck starter to start a 390 right now. From that I'd infer they're both the same tooth count since there's no clashing. Beyond that, i still keep thinking there;s a difference in thickness.
I have a 300 flywheel sitting out at the shop. I will try to take a few measurements for ya today. It's the 390 that has been put away. I have been hauling stuff from my home garage to storage since we are selling our home. trying to clean up the garage a bit.
The 300 flywheel will not work on a 390. The bolt pattern is different and the center hole on the 300 is to small. The only thing the two flywheels seem to have in common is they are both zero balance.
Hmm... thanks for that. I guess it's time for a clutch then. But i swore all of the 6 bolt crank patterns were the same. Like they say, you leanr something new every day.
Yeah, I'd think that since the 300 came out after the 390 and needed the same balance/tooth count that they'd just design them to use identical (or at least interchangeable) flywheels.
But look at it like this, a trained monkey can know GM interchange. It actually takes some sort of a brain to know Ford interchage .
