I'm working on my truck again and NEED to get a clutch for it, but I'm stuck.
460/4spd, I have an L&L flywheel already but no clutch. I have tried calling and emailing L&L several times and get no response. I'm not ordering something from a company that can't take the time to get back to me.
What is my next option? Their site said their clutch/flywheel have a different bolt pattern (proprietary?) so does anyone know if that's true? If not, anyone know what clutch will work with the flywheel? Also, I need the pilot bearing for this swap, but have no clue what to get or even where to get just that. I wish I would have just stayed auto...
Next, I need a complete weather strip kit. I thought BG had a kit, but I can't find it anymore. What was the other place people used for that stuff??
On the pilot bearing: identify a vehicle application that came with a 460 & a manual transmission, go to your local O'Reilly's, and ask for a pilot bearing for that vehicle.
Dennis Carpenter is the high-quality source for soft rubber parts. National Parts Depot I think carries their stuff as a reseller too. Everyone says avoid LMC on that.
I just bought headers from L&L. After 2 days I called them and asked them if they ever got my order because I never got an e-mail from them with a confirmation #. They told me to look in my junk box and sure enough their it was. Don't know why. Good luck on your build.

I forgot about DC, thanks. I don't think the pilot bushing is that easy since these trucks didn't come with 460/4spd,, don't know if newer ones are the same crank??
Well I don't know what L&L s deal is, but I'm not happy with how they operate so far. It's not like I asked them some complicated procedure, just if I get the bolts/pilot along with the clutch or if I can buy them.
So, I've got an old clutch out of a 400 sitting here in the garage. For S&G, I set it on the L&L flywheel and voila, the holes line up perfectly. It's a 3 finger, so it's too tall but does anyone know of a reason why a diaphragm clutch out of a 400 WOULDN'T work? I don't think I have a diaphragm one around here, but I'm gonna look.
The diaphragm pressure plate has a different bolt pattern. Also, there are two different three finger pressure plates, the Long style and the Borg & Beck. The Long style has "skinny" fingers, the B&B has wider fingers. Ford used the Long style for years.
The first picture is the Long style, second is a Borg & Beck. I think, but am not sure that the B&B and diaphragm share a common bolt pattern.
After a couple days of headache trying to track down a diaphragm style clutch for a 400, I got one. Holes line up perfectly, everything looks good so far. I've still got to install it to be sure but I can't see any reason it won't work. Best part is it was half the price if what L&L wants for theirs, which appears to be the exact same thing.
Brian, get a pilot bushing/bearing for a 302. That is what I used for my 460/4speed swap. The 302 bushing will sit in the deeper(smaller) cavity of the 460 crank. Hope that helps.
No, don't recall what vehicle I told them it was for. I think I got it at autozone, but not 100%. All you have to do is measure the small dia in the back of the crank of the 460, then measure the OD of the nose on your transmission input shaft. With those two diameters, go to parts store of your choice and ask them for said 302 pilot bearing/bushing. Mustang, truck, whatever vehicle. Point being, they should have one on hand. Have them bring it out and measure it to see if it matches your measurements off the 460 crank. Also, are you going to use a bearing or bushing? I used a bearing on mine, if you use a bushing, I have been told to make sure its a bronze bushing. Not sure how much that matters, believe its has to do with hardened input shaft will wear out the bronze instead of the bushing wearing out the input shaft.
