First, thanks to everyone who helps us "newbies" here at this great website. I just recently purchased a 99 F350 Powerstoke that was not abused but definately neglected. This site has helped me on many projects so far and has saved me big $$$'s. I searched the forums and found related topics on this subject but all the consules were not working at all. Everything works great except it is very dim. If you turn the headlights on in the evening before dark it is completely unreadable. I have checked to ensure the "dimmer" switch is where it should be. Does the console normally get dim before it completely stops working? Just checking before I pull the consule down.
I think this is normal as I also have this problem. I think the only way to stop it would be to somehow stop the display from dimming. Maybe someone here knows how to do this as I would like to do this also. FTE rules
There is a wire in the passenger side kick panel that you can disconnect or cut, which keeps the display from dimming when you turn on the headlights. It's light blue with a red tracer.

Thanks!
My display did start getting dimmer until it completly failed. I followed Miescha's instuctions and repaired it free and have not had a problem since. This LINK decribes the repair. The fix that ryaneverk2 shows is a way to keep it at daylight bright after your headlights are on and that may be what you want. Mine is bright enough for me without disabling the dimmer. It should be good and bright without the lights on during the day or night.
Thanks zx250. I'll go ahead and do the "fix" I found on the forums and see if that corrects it.
If it still seems dim then I will try ryaneverk2's advice on cutting the wire but I think it will be okay. I know it should be alot brighter than it is right now.
