i need to know what color wires control what on the 4 pin connector under the hood that goes to the taillights. right now all of my left side lights are working but none of my right side lights are. now there was some home done wiring done to install two trailer plugs, and next time im home im gonna strangle my dad for how he did it. but for now knowing the proper wire colors will get me going the right direction. thanks
Get yourself a tester, and don't get hung up on colors. There are three wires that come to the rear of the truck for lights.
One is for tail lightes, both sides and license plate light. The other two are for left and right turn signal that also share brake lights.
The fourth can be used for a ground back to the truck or for power to trailer work lights, your call.
Has the steering column been changed out? Don't know what year truck you have but if it is the single master cylinder your hot wire to the rear starts there.
Things can be changed on these trucks, so we recommend that you do your own research. Crawl under the truck, there just aren't many wires leaving the firewall heading to the back. It shouldn't take but a minute to find the correct wires, and be able to troubleshoot further.
There were originally four wires going to the rear. They are:
-Black/Red stripe for backup
-Brown for taillights and license plate
-Green for Right Turn&Brake
-Yellow/Blk stripe for Left Turn&Brake
The Green and Yellow are in their own blue connector under the dash (where they turn into Orange/Blue stripe and Green/Orange stripe) that comes out of the steering column. The other two split off to their respective destinations (Black to back-up switch and Brown to headlight switch). Hopefully all you'll need to do is get these straight under the bed. If not, it could be time to dig into the turn-signal switch (not fun) .
the truck is a 72 f100 the steering column has never been replaced but the turn signal cam has numrous times so i am going to find a new switch for it i have had to replace wires in the column in the past because the wires to the cam got too short to splice too any more. i am realy gonna work on the wife to get a painless wiring replacement harness.
You can still order the TS switch through a Ford dealer. Last time I checked for one they had two different part numbers so you might check your switch for a number. Mine doesn't have one on it so I just took some digital pics of it and I'm going to take them to the dealer.
