Startup Problem

Hi all... I have a 1986 Ford F-150. It's extremely worn but still runs fairly well for me. I haven't had any issues with it for a couple of months now, but this morning a problem arose.

Yesterday, I did an oil change, put a new oil filter on, and washed the entire thing, including spraying off the engine. After all of that, it still ran very well, and I was able to drive around a bit with it. This morning, though, it won't start up at all. It won't turn over at all, it just keeps trying and trying but goes nowhere. I thought it may have been having a difficulty with a spark or something to that effect because of the water from the day before, so I let it sit for a few hours.

Later, on the second go around, it started up immediately with no problems. After about 20 seconds, though, the engine suddenly stopped and the truck went back to not turning over at all.

It seems like a very simple solution, considering that it was running fine just the day before. Any ideas? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

-Will

Take the distributor off to check for water condensation inside the distributor. Did you water down the entire engine compartment? Wipe it dry with a soft cloth and don't "adjust anything" inside it. If you see any water on the cap (inside) Spark plug holes may be grounding if you gotten alot of water in there. It's dry out with this hot weather....

Haven't been able to check it out too much yet... been very busy... but early today (a couple of days after the problem began) I tried to start it up again. Well, it immediately started, followed by an IMMEDIATE shutoff of the engine. I wonder, though... if condensation isn't to blame for this, then is there a chance that the engine isn't getting enough fuel? I wonder if there is a problem with my fuel pump, but I'm not sure if that is something that'd just go out randomly while my truck sits in my driveway.

Well, it doesn't look like condensation was the issue. We took a good look at both the spark plug caps and the distributor, making sure to dry anything we saw, and it still won't start up. I'm now moving forward with the assumption that my fuel pump is the problem... although I'm not sure if that would just randomly quit on me while it sits in my driveway.

Any other opinions?

You have probably dislodged a wire somewhere with the washer wand which is now causing a intermittent problem from being disturbed

Closely inspect all the ignition connections for a hanging by a thread type connection where the wire goes into a connector.
