'99 7.3 Won't Start
My truck is a 1999 7.3 Diesel with 235,000 miles. It's been very well maintained and hasn't required any major repairs recently. The truck has new batteries, a 1 year old starter, cps and water pump. This problem came out of the blue with no warning or any signs of trouble.
The problem started last night after work. I went to start it and it turned over, but didn't start like it normally does after the first couple of seconds. It didn't start at all. There was an audible clicking sound from behind the dashboard that wasn't there before. The clicking sound only seems to happen when the key is turned and the starter is turning. The engine started on the third try when the clicking sound stopped.
This morning the truck wouldn't start at all. If I turn the key, the starter turns over like normal but the engine will not run. I tried about 6 times and it wouldn't start. The new clicking sound is still coming from behind the dash and seems to accelerate when I stop turning the ignition as if whatever it is is unspooling.
Any ideas?
Please help. The wife wants her car back!

Clicking
I agree with GREGROB - the clicking noise from under the dash is due to insufficient electrical power (voltage or amps) to start the engine. Both my buddy and I have experienced this in the last 6 months. In my case I needed new batteries, but in his case simply cleaning and tightening the battery connections solved the problem.
Could also be the alternator of course!

yes, gregrob is right. if this fails however, then test the fuel pump. i had the stealership put in 4 in a row before they droped the tank on my orders and found something had been dumped in. it eat everything in the tank. but i'm sure you didn't have that problem. good luck. the volt meter on the dash only shows voltage in the system not if charging or not.

ops-guy, are you getting the normal WTS light and dinging stupid chime stuff when you turn the key?
That clicking under the dash sounds a lot like the #30 fuse which is also tied to the filter bowl fuel heater element along with other things, the biggy being the PCM. Now if your batteries are on their way south and cannot generate 10.5v to the PCM, you will go nowhere, and there will be clicking behind the dash. Have the batteries load tested.

I have a 1999 7.3 with 130000 easy miles, well maintained. The truck was driven today for about 25 miles it shut down at a traffic light but restarted. the service engine light came on. It stalled 4 times before I got it off the road. A friend came by that works at the Ford dealership and put a ford computer on it. It gave an error code because of the super chip. We removed it and the computer would no longer read the truck computer. I have had the cam sensor replaced about 4 months ago. Truck spins over but will not fire off.
